    LIGHTHOUSE OF COLLIER ELECTS NEW BOD MEMBERS

    Lighthouse of Collier Inc., Center for Blindness and Vision Loss (www.lighthouseofcollier.org), appointed Drs. Suzana Tanimoto-Ginsberg, Stephen Schwartz and Barrett Ginsberg members of its board of directors. According to Susan Maurer, president of Lighthouse of Collier, the doctors’ experience and passion will help the organization fulfill its goals and aspirations
  • January 25, 2012 Gulfshore Business Daily:The Lighthouse of Collier will host Walk A Mile In Our Shoes on March 10. The one-mile awareness walk will give registered walkers a chance to use special glasses to experience a literal mile in the shoes of someone with vision impairment.     LIGHTHOUSE OF COLLIER EARNS ACCREDITATION

    The National Accreditation Council for Agencies Serving People with Blindness or Visual Impairment (NAC) (www.nacasb.org) awarded accreditation to Lighthouse of Collier Inc. NAC is the standard setting and accrediting body that works with agencies and schools providing services and programs to people who are blind. As accreditation is required for state funding; Lighthouse of Collier can now seek state funding through the Florida Division of Blind Services. 2011 Accomplishments/In the News

  • January 29,2011 Lighthouse of Collier hosted a Valentine’s gift making party at Build a Bear in Coastland Mall on Saturday, January 29, 2011, for the blind and visually impaired children of Collier County. The children were able to make their bear gift with sound making devices-either pre recorded sounds or they could record their own special message. The parents had a great time meeting and sharing their experiences.  Lighthouse of Collier continues to have monthly events for the blind and visually impaired children of Collier County.This exclusive event for the blind and visually impaired children of Collier County is a continuation of the generosity of 34th Great Annual Dock Canoe Race.

    Lighthouse of Collier Inc. (www.lighthouseofcollier.org), Center for Blindness and Vision Loss, appointed Marv Lader and Dr. Frederick T. Brown as members of the board of directors. Lader, a retired CEO of several software companies, has more than 40 years of experience in assisting organizations. Brown, a board certified optometric physician with Eye Centers of Florida, has practiced optometry for thirty years.

    •   January 15, Lighthouse f Collier’s Vision and Hearing Fair was held at the Golden Gate Community Center; which featured: Government and non-profit agencies offering special needs services, vision and hearing aid sales professionals, free vision, hearing and diabetic screenings.

    •   January 19, Electronic Vision Access Solutions (EVAS) of Rhode Island, installed technology for both the blind and visually impaired.  The EVAS SRM, an OCR that can      Scan, Read and Magnify, and the Value Series Systems, a computer with speech and large print access, were installed, for public use.

  • April 17, 2010, Lighthouse of Collier participates in the Southwest Florida VisionWalk at Lakes Regional Park in Ft. Myers. Brought to you by The Foundation for Fighting Blindness, over 200 participants.

  • April 19, 2010, Lighthouse of Collier, Inc., is pleased to announce the Eschenbach and Besser magnifying glasses are on display by the Collier County Association for the Blind (CCAB).  CCAB has generously loaned the display of 21 magnifying glasses so that they can be sampled by the visually impaired at the Lighthouse of Collier’s donated office space.  CCAB serves Collier residents who are visually impaired or legally blind.  CCAB meets the 2nd and 4th Monday of every month (Sept.through May) at the Golden Gate Community Center for fellowship, peer support and monthly guest speakers.  For more information on CCAB, call Carolyn McMahon at 774-9393.

    • ·        May 2009, Lighthouse of Collier, Inc. is established as a Florida Not for Profit Corporation (A Leadership Council was formed 18 months prior to get the center established).
    • ·        August 2009, Granted 501 (c) ( 3 ) status from IRS
    • ·        August 2009, Office space donated by Bayfront, Inc.
    • ·        August 2009, Office furniture donated by State’s Attorney office
    • ·        September 2009, Featured in the 2009-2010 GulfShore Life’s Social register
    • ·        September 2009, Audio Ballot voting machine installed and training available to the public by appointment
    • ·        September-December 2009, featured in every weekly issue of the Florida Weekly
    • ·        October 2009, Joyce Hildreth, Director,  Division of Blind Services for the State of Florida, came to Naples as a guest speaker. Mrs. Hildreth discussed the history, structure and services available from the DBS. This is only the second time in over 20 years that a State Director had traveled from the DBS office in Tallahassee to speak to the public in Naples.
